Huysmans didn't want literature to veil her face - but to show us reality in its rawest truth. For a long time he believed the situation was hopeless, that life was nothing more than a grim farce in which only the worst could be expected. Then came the moment when he perceived a light in the gloomy mist. A unique moment and one which most often escapes the comprehension of those who experience it. Huysmans converted to Catholicism. Reality became his pungent, fascinating Gospel. The faith he embraced never lost sight of the misery of incarnation. It resisted the ordeal of the present, never distorting reality, chasing away anything that might stand in the way of salvation, such as: the ugliness of Catholic art, worn down by excessive prudishness the inanity of bigots, and every form of angelism. From the Naturalistic writer, close to Zola, to the Oblate at Ligugé from the supposedly decadent aesthete of 'A rebours' to the mystic enamoured of liturgy, medieval symbolism and plainchant: there has only ever been one Huysmans, a man driven by a passion for truth, who saw what he dared not even hope for rise above the grimy silhouettes of modern urban society.
