The magic begins at teatime!

Judith Kerr OBE was born in Berlin. Her family left Germany in 1933 to escape the rising Nazi party, and came to England. She studied at the Central School of Art and later worked as a scriptwriter for the BBC.

Judith married the celebrated screenwriter Nigel Kneale in 1954. She left the BBC to look after their two children, who inspired her first picture book, The Tiger Who Came to Tea. Published in 1968 and never out of print in the fifty years since, it has become a much-loved classic and perennial bestseller.

Judith was awarded the Booktrust Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016, and in 2019 was named Illustrator of the Year at the British Book Awards. Judith died in May 2019 at the age of 95, and her stories continue to entertain and delight generations of children.

L'auteur - Judith Kerr

Judith Kerr est née à Berlin en 1923. Son père est un influent critique littéraire et dramaturge opposé au nazisme. Quand Hitler arrive au pouvoir - Judith a 9 ans - la famille Kerr fuit l'Allemagne, transite par la Suisse, la France, avant de s'installer à Londres en 1936. Malgré le danger, elle garde de cet exil un souvenir d'aventure. Pendant le Blitz, elle travaille à la Croix rouge, et sort diplômée de la Central School of Arts and Crafts en 1945. Elle épouse l'écrivain Nigel Kneale et travaille comme scénariste à la BBC jusqu'à la naissance de leurs enfants. Son oeuvre exceptionnelle créé toujours l'engouement au Royaume-Uni et lui vaut d'être sacrée en 2012 Officière de l'Ordre de l'Empire Britannique pour ses services rendus à la littérature jeunesse et à l'éducation sur l'Holocauste.
