Welcome to the Apress Active Directory Field Guide. Within these pages, you'll find a no-nonsense, no-fluff guide to installing, securing, and troubleshooting Active Directory, whether for a new installation or an existing network. I imagine your first question would be, "Why another Active Directory guide?" A good question, and one that deserves an answer: Since you're reading this, I assume that you're a network administrator or consultant who just can't get through those 1,000-page reference tomes no matter how much you mean to.

(Personally, I've got a few books on my bookshelf that I can't decide whether to read or bench-press.) To address this, I wrote this book to provide a "quick-start guide" for networking professionals like you and me, who need to deploy and maintain Microsoft's flexible-but-occasionally-infuriating directory service but who don't want to sift through a monstrous volume that contains more filler than actual useful information.

I've grouped the content into a useful order to take you from installing a brand new AD infrastructure all the way through managing large-scale deployments and migrations. Along the way, you'll learn about day-to-day tasks like user and group administration, Group Policy, and securing your Active Directory servers and clients. You can read this guide from cover to cover or just flip directly to the information that you need- the choice is entirely yours. At the end of each chapter, I've also included references to other works, both online and in print, for when you decide to dig even deeper into a particular subject.
