Résumé
JXTA is a different approach to a similar problem - that of building computer systems that can dynamically discover and co-operate with other similar systems, anywhere on the Internet. This kind of interaction characterizes some of the most interesting applications that have appeared for the Internet in the last year: Napster, Gnutella, Morpheus, and their relatives, all described as 'peer-to-peer' applications. In these systems, a user installs a client program, which discovers other installed clients on other machines, and communicates with them - allowing the sharing of files, such as MP3s, between computers. This peer-to-peer architecture is a completely new paradigm in software design, representing a totally different approach to the standard client-server frameworks used in almost all the distributed systems that currently exist.
JXTA aims to provide a set of technologies that allow programmers to develop clients and services that can interact in this way, without having to implement all of the elements that make up such a system themselves. Aspects such as discovery of peers, advertising presence, penetrating firewalls, and transferring data, which are common to all peer-to-peer applications, are handled by a set of standardlibraries that are available to a JXTA application.
JXTA is a basic tool, on top of which it is possible to build anything; in that sense, it's a lot like a fundamental computing platform, like an operating system. An operating system such as UNIX provides very little functionality in and of itself - it mediates between programs and hardware resources (disk, keyboard, monitor, memory). The power of a UNIX system is provided not by the operating system itself, but by the programs, which run on it (web servers, word processors, games, etc.). JXTA is the same - it provides little functionality, but many possibilities, for the development of applications that have yet to be invented.
