Advanced Application Design

Résumé

There are many "moving parts" in a distributed application, and many different technologies can come to bear on the different pieces of a solution. We have written a book that addresses this complexity, a book on distributed application design. In designing this book, we decided that we did not want to do the standard "new feature march"; therefore, this book is not a blow-by-blow iteration of the new features of ASP.NET 2.0, but rather a discussion of how the different packages and servers available can be put together across different tiers of a distributed application and how they can meet your real-world requirements.

This book focuses on the design of distributed applications using the .NET Framework as your platform. We treat ASP.NET not as an environment for the generation of HTML, but rather as an application hosting environment-one capable of servicing requests not just for Web Forms, but also for Web Services, distributed objects via remoting, and even your own custom application hosting needs. When you treat ASP.NET as an application server instead of as a web application development environment, your field of view dramatically increases. Web Forms become just a single piece of a larger, more complex puzzle-the puzzle of distributed application design, where the pieces also include Web Services, COM+, data access, and many others. In this book, we focus on these logical layers and physical tiers of a distributed application, and the communication that occurs between them.

Understanding ASP.NET as an application hosting framework will enable you to design better distributed applications, and it lays the groundwork for you to design the applications of tomorrow with Windows Vista and Windows Communication Foundation.
