Explores, in detail, the exciting new open source Spring framework--a lightweight J2EE alternative for building complex web applications

Rob Harrop, Jan Machacek - Collection The Expert's Voice in Java

Résumé

In recent times, the Java world has seen a move away from so-called "heavyweight" architectures such as Enterprise JavaBeans toward lightweight frameworks and tools. Leading this move is the open source Spring framework, which provides a lightweight platform upon which you can build your own applications and services.

We were introduced to Spring early on, before the 1.0 release, and we have been building production applications with Spring since this release. We have also become heavily involved in the project to the point where Rob is now a committer and is leading the current Spring JMX effort. As developers, the two things we can honestly say about Spring are that it greatly simplifies the creation of complex applications and it puts a lot of the fun back into developing.

The number of different services Spring offers is huge, but at its core, Spring provides a highly configurable Inversion of Control (IoC) container that you can use to wire together your application components and dependencies. The Spring IoC container is an extremely comprehensive implementation of IoC technology, and in this book, we explore all the IoC features Spring offers that you may not find in other frameworks.

On top of the IoC container, Spring brings together a wide range of open source tools and makes them easily accessible using standard design patterns. In this book, you see how to build web applications using Spring and its integration of Apache Struts, Jakarta Velocity, Jakarta POI, and many more. You learn how to replace common EJB features with Spring alternatives, including Spring's comprehensive AOP-based transaction management framework.

After reading this book, you will thoroughly understand the Spring framework and the projects with which it integrates. This book will equip you with the knowledge you need to design and build efficient, manageable applications with Spring.

Enjoy!
