"Amphitryon" is a comedy of mistaken identity and marital confusion. The story revolves around the character Amphitryon, a Theban general, and his wife Alcmena. The confusion begins when the real Amphitryon returns home, only to find himself locked out of his own house, as Jupiter, in his form, is already inside with Alcmena. The play humorously explores the chaos and misunderstandings that arise from this situation. It also involves the character Sosia, Amphitryon's servant, who faces a similar identity crisis when he encounters Mercury, Jupiter's messenger, who has taken on Sosia's appearance. Molière's "Amphitryon" is known for its witty dialogue, comic situations, and satirical commentary on human foibles, including jealousy and gullibility.
