Le fils prodigue et les siens - xxe-xxie siecles
Résumé
--
How did the prodigal son manage to make his way into a resolutely atheist century? Why have contemporary writers adopted the child who disobeys then comes back to weep in his father's arms? A strange choice of model in a century that advocates individual freedom and despises family values. But there he is, in literature, painting, the theatre, music, the cinema and even... TV series. So why this multiplication of prodigal sons? To answer that question, a selection of experts were invited to venture into literary and artistic, as well as sociological and psychoanalytical domains. We learn that there is indeed a story of the prodigal son in the 20th and 21st centuries, and that it says something about our times. This biblical character incarnates modern man's fate. What an apotheosis for this wayward boy who longed to eat pigs' swill! After Rilke, he became the symbol of freedom, the quest for the self, the affirmation of the individual against the family: he is a rebel. He is alone, free and melancholic: he is an artist. This prodigal son reserves more than one strange metamorphosis...
