Zola biblique

Dans ce « Zola biblique », Clélia Anfray fait découvrir un Zola inattendu. Elle interroge les relations à la fois intimes, conflictuelles et paradoxales entre Zola et le Livre saint. Les « Rougon-Macquart » se révèlent un puissant exemple des ambiguïtés de l'écrivain : on y voit les grands « mythes » principaux (le péché originel, Abel et Caïn ou la cité babylonienne) réinterprétés dans un sens inhabituel. Suivent de nombreuses questions : que doit-on penser de ce paradoxe si étrange qui fait de cet écrivain communément ressenti comme féministe, le romancier du « péché originel » et de la sexualité pervertie ? Comment comprendre que la faute soit, dans le cycle, l'oeuvre unique de la femme et la virginité, sa seule vertu ? Que dire de cette croyance en une fraternité à venir, quand toute relation entre frères se résout inéluctablement dans un fratricide réel ou symbolique ? Quand Abel et Cain semblent parfois même se confondre ? Que penser enfin de cette justice socialiste prônée dans « Germinal » où chacun sera récompensé, non en vertu de ses « besoins », mais en fonction de « ses mérites » - incompatibles pourtant avec la conception naturaliste de l'hérédité - ou « pire » encore : en fonction de « ses oeuvres » ? Mettre au jour ces questions mais aussi tenter d'y répondre, c'est toute l'ambition de cet essai.

In this book, Clélia Anfray introduces readers to a surprising Zola. She investigates the intimate, conflictual and paradoxical relations between Zola and the Holy book. The 'Rougon-Macquart' (collective title given to his twenty-novel cycle) is revealed to be an eloquent example of the writer's ambiguity: we see the principal 'myths' (original sin, Cain and Abel, the Babylonian City) reinterpreted in an remarkable way. Thereafter, many questions are posed: what must we think of the strange paradox when a writer, generally considered to harbour feminist sympathies, is revealed to be the novelist of 'original sin' and perverse sexuality? How can we understand that sin, in the cycle, is the fruit of woman and virginity her only virtue? What should we think of his belief in a fraternity to come, when all relations between brothers inevitably end in fratricide - literal or symbolic? When Cain and Abel seem to merge into one? Finally, how should we understand the socialist justice advocated in 'Germinal', when each person is rewarded not according to his 'needs' but his 'merits'- a concept that is incompatible with that the naturalist concept of heredity- or even more strangely: according to 'his works'? The ambition of this essay is firstly to reveal these questions, and secondly, to provide answers.
