Résumé
--
Born in Algeria in 1938, of 'pied-noir' parents -colons established in the country for several generations, Pierre Claverie left his homeland at the age of nineteen to study in a French university. Ten years later, having become a Dominican brother, he went back to Algeria, launched enthusiastically into the discovery of Algerian society and gradually became a 'man of two shores' capable of appreciating and allowing others to appreciate the pleasure of difference. Appointed Bishop of Oran in 1981, Pierre Claverie became deeply involved in the combat for a fraternal and open Algeria when, in the year 1990, the country was faced with violence. He was murdered on August 1, 1996, as were many other Algerians, well-known or anonymous, and a score of monks and nuns. From 1957 onwards, when Pierre Claverie left for France, the four members of his family (father, mother, Pierre and his sister Anne-Marie) wropte to each other: one letter each week for forty years! The first volume of that correspondance (1967-1969), entitled 'Il est tout de même permis d'être heureux', expressed the fundamental optimism of Pierre Claverie and his family. During the years of the second volume (1969-1975), Pierre experiences the complexities and conflicting loyalty of life. He speaks of 'that constantly experienced contradiction' - the title of this volume -, that tension he feels, painfully and profitably at the same time, between his desire for an inner life, withdrawn from the world, and the demands of an active existence, more and more turned toward the exterior: a teacher, councillor to the Bishop of Constantine, Mgr Scotto, director of Les Glycines, a diocesan centre of study in Algiers... This is a truly exceptional and rare document, not only because of the personnality of one of the protagonists, the place he lived and became involved as a cleric then as bishop, but also because of its originality and the literary qualities of that family correspondence.
