Figures de la filiation

Dans un temps où la figure de l'enfant fait l'objet de nombreuses captures fantasmatiques, comment repenser la notion de filiation ? La thèse de cet ouvrage est que le mot « fils » est une définition de notre propre humanité. La filialité, en son sens profond, signifie la nécessité de reconnaître une « précédence », c'est-à-dire le fait que nul ne peut se situer à l'origine de lui-même. C'est pourquoi l'obsession contemporaine d'un individu qui pourrait s'auto-fonder est justement à comprendre comme une haine, souvent masquée, de la filiation. Une telle haine trouve de multiples expressions, notamment le désir que le « fils » ne soit pas le nom de la nouveauté, mais seulement une perpétuation de ce qui a été. Revisiter quelques grands lieux de la pensée permet sans doute le recul nécessaire pour affronter les questions d'aujourd'hui. C'est ce qui donne forme au parcours proposé : le mythe freudien de « Totem et tabou », le récit de la tour de Babel et l'histoire du patriarche Abraham, l'émergence de Dieu sous la figure du Fils dans le christianisme, l'articulation d'une fraternité et d'une filialité, une relecture de l'affirmation de Jacques Lacan selon lequel il n'y a pas de rapport sexuel et ses effets sur une pensée de la filiation.

At a time when the figure of the child is the object of several fantastical representations, how can we rethink the notion of filiation? This book advances the thesis that the word son, 'filius', is a definition of our own humanity. Filiality, at its deepest level, signifies the need to recognize a 'precedence', i.e. the fact that no being can contain its own origin. That is why today's obsession with the notion that an individual may be capable of causing his own creation must be perceived as a hatred, often veiled, of filiation. This hatred finds many forms of expression, especially the desire that 'filius' should not define what is new, but only the perpetuation of what has been. Revisiting certain great thinkers can provide us with the necessary perspective to confront today's problematic, and here, give form to the contents: the Freudian myth of 'Totem and Taboo', the story of the tower of Babel and the history of the patriarch Abraham, the emergence of God beneath the face of the Son in Christianity, the articulation of fraternity and filiality, a new reading of Jacques Lacan's theory that there is no sexual relation and its effects on thoughts about filiation.
