En présentant quelques grandes figures de la tradition de l'Oratoire de France, Gilbert Caffin illustre une manière singulière d'être chrétien dans le monde, en sympathie avec son temps. Bérulle, Simon, Malebranche, Lamy, Gratry, Laberthonnière... Leurs différences et leur complémentarité, leurs exigences aussi, témoignent d'une tonalité particulière, d'« un air que l'on respire », comme on le dit souvent dans les paroisses et les collèges tenus par les oratoriens. Cet ouvrage met en lumière l'inspiration d'un groupe de prêtres depuis quatre cents ans (1611-2011) au service de leurs contemporains dans l'Église de France, service interrompu deux fois en 1791 et en 1905 et deux fois repris en 1852 et en 1920. Ce groupe d'hommes, aussi modeste soit-il, se sait porteur d'une riche tradition spirituelle qui peut encore nourrir la foi des disciples de Jésus-Christ en ce temps de grandes mutations. Ce livre fait écho aux conférences données par l'auteur à l'église Saint-Eustache de Paris durant cette année jubilaire.

By presenting some great figures from the long-standing tradition of the Oratoire de France, Gilbert Caffin illustrates a unique way of being a Christian in the world, in harmony with one's time. Bérulle, Simon, Malebranche, Lamy, Gratry, Laberthonnière... Their differences and their complementarity, not to mention their demands, are evidence of a very special ambience, of an 'air we breathe', as it is often described in Oratorian-run parishes and colleges. This book highlights the inspiration of a group of priests who, for the past four hundred years (1611-2011) have dedicated themselves to serve their contemporaries in the Church of France, a tradition twice interrupted - in 1791 and 1905 - and twice resumed - in 1852 and 1920. This group, though modest, is aware of its rich spiritual heritage, which can still nourish the faith of Jesus Christ's disciples in this period of great upheaval. This book echoes the conferences given by the author at the church of Saint Eustace, in Paris, during this jubilee year.
