Résumé
--
Europe, invaded by foreign peoples who don't have the same culture, or the same values, or the same religion as those already settled there. Gregory the Great was the first pope (from 590 to 604) to show realism, to accept their presence and negotiate with them. 'They' were the Franks, the descendents of Clovis, ascendants of Charlemagne. As Christians sank into despair and indifference, no longer believing in the immortal soul, even doubting the existence of a redeeming God, Gregory spoke to them in his sermons and in his writings, not as a wise scholar but as a pastor, close to their tangible everyday problems, simply, in his immense trust in Jesus Christ. Faithful to his deep convictions as a believer, he freed himself from political constraints that had become archaic, to launch the Church in a troubled world and give it a truly 'universal' dimension: in other words, Catholic.
