Edith Stein est connue en France pour ses écrits spirituels et, de manière plus restreinte, pour son oeuvre philosophique. Pourtant ses travaux dans le domaine de l'éducation méritent également d'être découverts. Philosophe et enseignante, elle s'efforça d'explorer la profondeur de l'acte d'éduquer du point de vue de sa signification et de ses enjeux individuels et communautaires. L'intérêt de sa réflexion et de sa pratique réside essentiellement dans son effort pour fonder la pédagogie sur une anthropologie. Car si l'éducation est formation de toute la personne, elle engage nécessairement une certaine vision de l'homme. Le travail de clarification anthropologique mené par Edith Stein procède d'une conscience aiguë de la dignité humaine et nous renseigne en même temps sur la nature de l'éducation comprise comme une formation de l'homme dans sa totalité. C'est pourquoi ce service de la personne prend non seulement en compte le corps et l'esprit, mais va jusqu'à scruter attentivement la soif de sens inscrite dans l'âme de chaque individu. En d'autres termes, c'est le souci de l'intériorité de la personne qui caractérise la vision anthropologique d'Edith Stein, et vient éclairer sa conception de l'éducation. Si cette conception est tout entière habitée par sa foi dans le Christ, Edith Stein n'adopte pas pour autant une position idéologique considérant par exemple que le chrétien détiendrait le monopole de l'éducation. Elle propose d'abord une parole libre qui rend raison, avec respect et conviction, d'une découverte émerveillée de la beauté de la personne et du mystère de son intériorité. C'est de ce point haut, de ce centre, qu'elle tire toutes les conséquences en matière d'éducation. À une époque où la question éducative cristallise à la fois tant de craintes et d'espérances, c'est cette parole vivante que nous avons cherché à partager. Pour tous ceux et celles qui sont animés du même idéal, ce sillon lumineux qu'Edith Stein a tracé par toute sa vie a aujourd'hui valeur, non seulement de témoignage, mais également d'encouragement. Et, pour tous les autres, il demeure une proposition qui mérite d'être entendue, dans la mesure où elle ne peut qu'alimenter de manière féconde la réflexion dans le domaine de l'éducation. Deux annexes importantes complètent cet ouvrage : - La première est consacrée à la figure d'Etty Hillesum (« Etty Hillesum pèlerine du sens »). - La seconde annexe offre la première traduction française intégrale d'un texte capital d'Édith Stein de 1936 : « Le château de l'âme ». Edith Stein is well-known in France for her spiritual writings and, to a lesser degree, for her philosophic works. Yet her efforts in the realm of education deserve equal recognition. As philosopher and teacher, she endeavoured to explore in depth the act of teaching, investigating both its significance and the personal and community stakes involved. The importance of her reflection and practice resides essentially in her attempt to base her pedagogical skills on anthropology. For if the purpose of education is to form the person as a whole, it must entail a certain vision of the human. Edith Stein's work of anthropological clarification was the product of her heightened awareness of human dignity. It also informs us of the nature of education perceived as that of man in his entirety. Which is why this act of service to the person takes into account not only the mind and body, but goes so far as to examine the thirst for meaning inscribed in the soul of each individual. In other words, it is her concern for the inner being that characterises Edith Stein's anthropological vision, and explains her concept of education. Although this concept is entirely habited by her faith in Christ, Edith Stein does not adopt an ideological stance, for example, by considering that education is a Christian monopoly. Above all, she is a voice that speaks freely, with respect and conviction, of the enthralling discovery of the beauty and mystery of a person's inner being. It is from this vantage point, from the core, that she draws her conclusions with regard to education. At a time when the question of education crystallizes both so many fears and hopes, we have sought to share this living word. For all those who are driven by the same ideal, the shining furrow which Edith Stein ploughed throughout her life has produced for us today a harvest of testimony and encouragement. And, for everyone else, it remains a proposal which deserves to be heard, to the extent that it can but generate reflection in the world of education. Two substantial annexes complete this volume: - The first is devoted to Etty Hillesum ('Etty Hillesum pelerine du sens'). - The second annexe provides the first complete translation into French of a major text written by Edith Stein in 1936: 'Le château de l'âme'.
