L'histoire des evangiles
Michel Quesnel - Collection Lire la Bible
Résumé
--
How did the founding texts of Christianity come into being, and how were they handed down? From the preaching of Jesus of Nazareth to the selection that led to only four authors being retained (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), Michel Quesnel recounts the history of a transmission: that which extended from the earliest oral traditions to the written form of the Gospels we know. The author does not limit himself to the canonical Gospels: he also presents the abundant literary production of the first centuries AD concerning Jesus, notably the Gospel according to Peter, the Gospel according to Thomas, and the Gospel according to Judas, only recently discovered. But the story doesn't end there! The work by the copyists of Antiquity and the Middle Ages also has its part to play. They reproduced the manuscripts at their disposition, sometimes introducing variants. Thus an itinerary begins to form, stretching from the oldest fragments on papyrus to the Bibles of today, by way of the luxurious parchments of the Constantine era and the first printed Bibles. A glossary is provided to assist the novice reader.
