Why write this book? The author answers:"I did not write this book as a cultural, religious, legal or political historian. I did so to help people engage in dialogue in a world that is undergoing radical transformation, to help them discover a new kind of relation between cultures, religions and nations and so become 'citizens of the world'. Whether they be Christians or non-believers, politicians, media folk, economists, teachers, priests or students, I want to assist all those seeking guidance to assess and react more fully in a global situation that remains incomprehensible if universal religions are not taken into account. My aim is to succeed in exposing an extremely complex process in which cultural and religious history, politics and law interfere while ensuring the transparency of the programme I have been pursuing for many years (...) 'How naive!' pessimists and cynics will exclaim, whether they be politicians, economists, scholars or advertising executives. But, if we are not to abandon the idea of a better world order right from the start, this is the only realistic alternative."It is very clear that we find ourselves at a delicate turning point in international relations, in the relationship between the West and Islam, and between the three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam). The options are also clear: on the one hand, religious rivalry, a clash of cultures and international war on the other, cultural dialogue and peace between the religions - without which peace between the nations cannot be secured. To avert this deadly menace that hangs over all humanity, it is urgent to demolish, stone by stone, the walls of prejudice between us rather than erect new barriers of enmity, hatred and vengeance. We must build bridges for dialogue. It is not a question of closing one's eyes to the contradictions, or giving in to facile syncretism. The challenge is for each side to heed what the other has to say to achieve understanding founded on common respect and an objective and honest acknowledgement of those things that separate us and unite us."No world peace without religious peace": that conviction drives all the great German theologian's research, inspires his readers and helps them take up challenges that concern all humanity."
