La grâce et la liberté chez saint bernard de clairvaux
Michel Corbin - Collection Initiations au moyen âge
Résumé
--
Did the Abbé de Clairvaux (1090-1153) consider freedom from a metaphysical point of view, as an indeterminate power to say yes or no to the principle of being? If this were the case, grace would not be necessary to make good use of our free will, and the statements in the Letter to the Romans on the impossibility to justify through works would lose their significance. Holding the divine scriptures to be the unsurpassable testimony of the ever-increasing yes that God pronounces in man's favour when he makes Jesus rise up from the dead believing that this Event will attract all men's paths beyond their imagination Saint Bernard moves toward the inexpressible harmony of grace and freedom, while praying that the strength of the Resurrection will overflow into the depths of men's hearts. Not forgetting that the Gospels are the combined proclamation of God's grace and man's freedom, he carries on his investigation in hope of the City of God. And if he perceives free will, free opinion and free pleasure, it is all the better to admire how the gifts of God are « without repentance », (Romans 11, 29), how Charity engenders charity.
