Résumé
--
'The Rule' of Saint Augustine is perhaps lesser-known than that of Saint Benedict. Yet it inspired many religious foundations, especially canonical. Firstly intended for lay brothers, it became the rule of clerics gathered around their bishop, Augustine, in the same service of the local Church of Hippo Regius. That was why, after being eclipsed for several centuries, it was the object of renewed interest at the time of the Gregorian reform. It promoted evangelical friendship and fraternity at the heart of a communion Church and aimed to constitute a community entirely working towards God. In this respect, it is the faithful echo of the Confessions: "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you."
