Facing Attila alone, Leo stood firm, his only weapon a cross. That vision of the great pope may be naive, but it highlights several of his qualities. He is alone. The Western Roman Empire has not only been ravaged by hordes of barbarians, they are now settling down there and founding their own kingdom. The emperor is weak all that remains is the moral strength of the bishops to guide the terrified population. Leo defends Rome, not only the capital of a dismantled empire, but the seat of the Church. It is Peter, the prince of the disciples, who speaks in that city through his bishops, his unworthy heirs. His testimony speaks of faith and discipline. Heaven help the bishop of Arles who, in his hasty zeal, took the risk of splitting southern Gaul from the universal Church. Faced with an Eastern Church torn by subtle dogmatic quarrels, Leo reminds people of their faith in the divinity and the humanity of Christ in a document acknowledged by all: the 'Tome to Flavian'. Alone in the face of adversity, Leo watches over his people, restores the truth of faith and strengthens pontifical authority. He was indeed a great pope. And a great saint.
