Martin Bodmer (1899-1971), had the wildest dream: to assemble the most significant written testimonies of humanity's political, religious and artistic history, in order to discern man's path in search of himself"across cultures and throughout the centuries. Among the 160,000 items patiently assembled by Martin Bodmer, the authors of this book have selected 81 priceless pieces to evoke twenty-five centuries of spiritual and religious history. From"The Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead"to the Valladolid Debate (1552), from the oldest complete Gospel in existence (2nd century) to the Koran of Suleiman the Magnificent (16th century), 72 of the most renowned French-speaking specialists in the world furnish their vision of a text or major spiritual phenomenon, from the very beginnings to the Renaissance. The objects are divided into four sections: Antiquity, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Each text is preceded by a photograph of the object (papyrus, manuscript or written document) and a photograph of a corresponding place of interest. From the banks of the Euphrates to those of the Guadalquivir, a unique panorama of our common history emerges. Stepping beyond past and present conflicts,"Orient-Occident"aims to offer a constructive reflection on our common roots, encouraging a better understanding of what unites and divides us. Carefully allotting generous areas of reflection to researchers and religious dignitaries, this work intends to make an important contribution to dialogue between cultures, so keenly pursued by Martin Bodmer and to offer a first-ever showcase of our universal patrimony. The 109 texts in this book use language that is accessible to the general public, while treating the selected objects in all their richness and complexity. The 221 photographs, none of which have been published before, were taken for the most part with a view camera in large format. They enhance this remarkable project: a vibrant dialogue resounds between stones, books and humanity, between the present and the past."
