Rimbaud - l'artiste et l'etre
Ernest Delahaye - Collection Litterature cerf
Résumé
--
'Admirers of Rimbaud will wonder why the book I have written about this great poet is less substantial than the one I devoted to Verlaine: a natural question if we judge by the importance these two names occupy in the history of our literature, for they represent a capital innovation in French poetry: expressive rhythm. [ ... ] Almost in its entirety, Verlaine's work recounts his emotional life: allusions to his unhappiness, his faults, his loves and his despair his anger, his regrets, his desires and his scruples his repentance and his religious fervour making up the most part. [ ... ] Rimbaud is a different case. Firstly, part of his poetry - almost impersonal - consists of descriptions and paintings objectivism. For example, it is Rimbaud who lives in 'A season in hell' and in half of the 'Illuminations' but these are 'spiritual combats', psychic agitations rather than events. The events, as early as the end of 1873, concern a man who has moved out of literature. The historian must be less concerned with the exterior life of Rimbaud than with that of his spirit.'
