Résumé
Saint Anselme, enfant d'Aoste (1033), moine et abbé du Bec (1059-1093), archevêque-primat de Cantorbéry (mort en 1109), est resté célèbre pour la preuve de l'existence de Dieu qu'il a proposée dans son Proslogion"(1078). Voulait-il déduire cette existence d'une notion préalable, celle de l'Être le plus parfait qui se puisse concevoir ? La teneur négative du Nom qu'il reconnaît à Dieu : « Tu es quelque chose de tel que rien de plus grand ne puisse être pens?, la procédure négative de la preuve, l'ensemble des textes montrent, au contraire, qu'il tente de décrire la percée de la divine Parole au plus intime du cœ ur, pour le déloger de sa suffisance et le tourner vers plus grand que lui. Comme il n'y a plus alors de distance entre l'ontologie et la christologie, le Dieu qu'il confesse est bien le Père de Jésus-Christ, Dieu passant toute idée de Dieu dans l'Alliance qu'il scelle « une fois pour toutes » avec l'homme (Rm 6,10).

He remains famous for the proof of God's existence he proposed in his"Proslogium"(1078). So did he try to deduce God's existence from a prior notion: that of the most perfect being conceivable? All the texts suggest the contrary: the negative substance of the Name he attributes to God: 'You are such that nothing greater can be thought', and the negative procedure of the proof, show that he attempts to describe the penetration of the divine Word as deeply as possible into our hearts, in order to lead us away from our sufficiency and direct us toward something greater than ourselves. Since there is no longer any distance between ontology and Christology, the God he confesses is indeed the father of Jesus-Christ, God beyond all notion of God in the Alliance that he seals 'for once and all' with Man (Romans 6,10)."
